ON15 – Action Learning Project – An Innovative Training Method for CLP Graduate Trainees

As the “New-Blood” in the Hong Kong power industry, Graduate Trainees (GT) of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) are required to build up solid technical knowledge on different aspects of power systems in order to ensure a safe and highly reliable power supply. To become professional engineers, GTs have to acquire transferable skills such as project management and interpersonal skills to overcome the challenges during project implementation and resource management of operation and maintenance activities. To achieve the goal of ‘Learn by Doing’, CLP Power Learning Institute (CLPPLI) launched an Action Leaning Project for GTs which aims at enriching their knowledge during the Scheme “A” training. The initiative is cost effective while generating remarkable outcomes. A successful case will be discussed in the paper, in which Arduino-based power system simulators focus on 11kV overhead line (OHL) auto-reclose scheme and closed ring circuit protection system were developed by GTs in the Project. Design thinking is one of the key elements incorporated when implementing the Action Leaning Project. Interactive learning and People-oriented approach help green staff to master technical knowledge and system configuration. GTs are given the opportunities to gain hands-on experience of developing the simulators and the model they built will be used as training tools for fellow colleagues to understand the operation of power system.
