SS01 – FOKUS

With the advent of new challenges and increasing stress levels, students have to be equipped with the necessary tools to stay focused. Therefore, we have invented FOKUS, a product made to assist you in ‘FOKUS’ing! FOKUS uses AIOT, a fusion of AI computer vision and IOT technology that measures and records performance, providing a data-supported analysis for the user. The FOKUS board is designed ergonomically, ensuring a working environment that can sustain focus and improve productivity. With data on carbon dioxide levels, ambient light, air quality, and noise levels, FOKUS provides a well-rounded report on the user’s performance. And with the eye aspect ratio measurement, FOKUS can even track the user’s blinking activity to gauge their concentration levels. The provided companion app allows users and parents to access data on the go, using it as a key performance indicator to examine the user’s productivity. By utilizing new technology, FOKUS can help students stay competitive in a variety of academic areas and improve their overall performance. In conclusion, FOKUS is an invaluable tool for students looking to improve their productivity and focus. With the help of our innovative product, students can focus on their work and maintain Hong Kong’s competitiveness.

SS02 – Plast-Eater

Waste disposal problem is a global concern. According to the Hong Kong Waste Reduction Website, in 2021, 21% of waste disposed in landfills is plastic. Through surveys conducted beforehand, we found that most people tend to throw away recyclable plastic due to inconvenience and laziness. Targeting the problem of recyclable plastic being sent to landfills, we have developed Plast-Eater. It is a plastic recycling machine that is able to ‘eat up plastic’. It turns plastics in daily life, such as plastic bottles and containers into valuable souvenirs, which makes recycling a convenient and pleasant experience. Through AI sorting, recyclable plastic and non-plastic waste can be distinguished, which then proceeds to filter out moldable plastic. Plastics are then shredded into small pieces and moulded after melting. The finished products are unique combinations of different types and colours of plastics. An app is linked to Plast-Eater, in which the system employs a network of intelligent algorithms to track individual amounts of recycling and provide recycling tips. In return, users may redeem souvenirs according to their recycling status. Plast-Eater has the potential to significantly increase recycling rate and promote sustainable waste disposal as the plastics can be recycled for numerous times.

SS05 – VTV Combo

VTV Combo is a set of tools which turns vision into voice. The set of tools can be applied to visually impaired people to help them grasp a better understanding of their surroundings. Many visually impaired individuals struggle with daily activities due to their limited vision. They have difficulty in seeing what surrounds them. Many of them rely on touch and a white cane to navigate their environment. Nowadays technology is so advanced that has improved tremendously compared to the several decades. What technology can bring to assist the visually impaired ones? How, to be exact, artificial intelligence can help? VTV Combo emerges from the idea of bringing AI to these people in need. With VTV Combo, they can use a small camera to identify and distinguish objects, and then receive audio feedback through text-to-speech technology. By integrating OpenCV with TTS, VTV Combo harnesses the power of artificial intelligence to support those in need.

SS06 – Eat It All

Hong Kong produces over 3400 tonnes of food waste every day. Current treatment methods – such as decomposing, donation and landfilling – are impractical and unsustainable; and incineration may lead to air pollution. Additionally, huge and increasing amounts also imply a waste of food resources. Working with the principle of reducing waste at the source, we designed the “Eat It All” system. It consists of a smart menu, food shelf and cloud database. On pressing the menu-update button, the prices of dishes are automatically adjusted to give discounts so that soon-to-expire ingredients are consumed faster. Varying dish sizes are also an option so that customers only order what they can finish. The smart menu is connected to the smart food shelf which automatically sends the required ingredients for each dish for cooking. The cloud database (storing data on ingredient quantities and expiry dates) is automatically updated whenever ingredients are added or used. The database also provides information on popular dishes and the ingredient purchase history for reference. With automation leading to convenience, efficiency and accuracy is the key success of the ‘Eat It All” system. “Eat It All, Waste No More!”
