SS03-Driver Drowsiness Detection System

Accidents will occur if the drivers is drowsy when driving. To avoid this, we design and prepare an instrument called “Driver Drowsiness Detection System” which uses Facial Recognition Technique to detect the status of the driver. The system uses Raspberry pi 4 as microcontroller to control the operation of the system, and webcam is used to monitor the drivers’ status. The features of “Driver Drowsiness System ” are as follows:

  • LED, LCD display and human-voice system are adopted to let passengers (including visually impaired and hearing impaired passengers) know that the driver is drowsy. When the driver is drowsy, passengers can immediately wake up the driver to protect their own safety and avoid traffic accidents
  • When the driver is drowsy, the system will immediately send an email to his/her supervisor so that he/she can contact the driver to ensure the safety of the driver and passengers, and to avoid traffic accidents
  • When the driver is drowsy, the system will immediately take photos and record the date and time of the driver’s drowsiness so that follow-up action can be taken by the public transport service and let the company analyze the frequency of the driver’s drowsiness when driving so that the company may rearrange the working hours and resting time of drivers to ensure the health of the driver

SS02-Anti-bacterial crab bio-bandages with crab bio-dressings

Anti-bacterial crab bio-bandages and crab bio-dressings are bio-degradable as it took 42 days and a month for complete bio-degradation respectively. They are better than commercial bandages such as Nexcare Hydrocolloid as the disposal of anti-microbial crab bio-bandages with bio-dressings would no longer pose burden to landfilling. Anti-microbial crab bio-bandages with bio-dressings are anti-bacterial with degree of deacetylation of DD% 82.6% from FTIR (due to the presence of chitosan) even without the application of other anti-microbial agents and hence can provide complete protection of wounds from skin and soft tissues infections and haemostatic (due to the presence of chitosan). After testing and certification based on IS997:2004 and BS EN 13726-1, they met many requirements specified and should be eligible for marketing.

SS01-Kombuchas from tannin-rich fruit skins as bio-disposables

The plastic pollution has affected globally for decades. Bio-disposables such as roasted kombucha (of fruit skins) cups and straws met many requirements specified in GB 18006-2008 and ISO18188:2016. No bacterial colonies were present in drinking water kept overnight in roasted kombucha cups or soaked with kombucha straws, so they are safe for serving as biodegradable disposables. The production cost for the production of roasted kombuchas using lemon skins was lower than that of orange skins as only 15 minutes were required for the roasting of lemon skins (cf. orange skins: 30 mins) at 120oC in increasing waterproofness and strength. Structural changes were investigated using FTIR.

SS08-Low-cost water disinfection by triboelectric nano-electroporator

Diarrhea is one of the top dominant causes of death worldwide. To prevent the illness, a high-efficiency energy water disinfection method is needed. Electroporation is a promising method to achieve this goal, in which an electrical field is applied to cells to damage its’ cell membranes and kill the cell by the great change in cell permeability. This technology has good potential in killing bacteria under high enough voltage as a result. Yet, providing high voltage is usually costly. Triboelectric nanogenerators are introduced to step up the high voltage with a relatively low cost. Through the contact-separation or relative sliding between two materials that have opposite triobolary, an asymmetric charge distributes in the media, which induces AC electricity flow between two electrodes to balance the local potential distribution. The voltage created by the coupling of contact electrification and electrostatic induction can be very large and be able to achieve water disinfection. In this project, we are going to present a water disinfector by electroporation driven by triboelectric charge strengthened by nanowires as the cheap energy source.

SS07-Passengers Redirection Monitoring System

It is observed that transportation is crowded with numbers of people during rush hours. This project is developed based on the importance of passenger flow monitoring and is able to solve the issues of inefficient passenger flow and overcrowding . The system currently focuses on using thermal cameras on the carriages to direct the passengers. Array of cameras will be placed at the top corner of the cart, for monitoring. The camera will be contacted to a processor that processes real time thermal images, and be able to detect any object in the scanned area of the train, which includes the number of passengers or the amount of cargo like boxes or wheelchairs. With the numbers of objects obtained, the system will be able to infer the approximate load of each cart and to the train and hence estimate the remaining available spaces. By using three colours , the current remaining capacity of each cart is shown and allows the passengers to locate the most spacious cart to ride on.

SS06-Auto-classification Recycle Bin

Our product aims to increase the environmental awareness of students and the public, and more importantly to urge people to take actions in garbage collection and waste reduction by recycling waste. To promote recycling, this system makes it easier by automatic waste classification. The system utilizes QRcode recognition technology to scan the QRcode on the object for identification purposes, then the recyclability information of the garbage stored in the QRcode of the wastes can be determined. In other words, only one trash can is needed for all garbage. This system will be first applied in primary and secondary schools, supporting all plastic bottles and aluminium cans sold within the campus. QRcodes will be applied on to products sold in the campus such that it is compatible with the system, where the collection side is implemented to replace the majority of the normal garbage bins. It is hoped that starting from small-scale recycling, the system can evolve and be promoted to the general society and update with this system, where recycling rate will rise and landfill saturation will drop. In such a way a city’s pollution problem can be alleviated. The final goal is to protect the Earth in the future.

SS05-Smart lock system

There are many classrooms and special room in a school. When someone needs to hire the venue, the school has to manage lots of administrative tasks such as recording borrowing details like person, date, duration and purpose of hiring. Also, it demands human resource to handle and manage the process. Our system can reduce the consumption of human resources used to manage this process. When a student wants to hire a classroom or special room, the teacher can manage the process systematically and effectively by electronic database management. The teacher can assign a time slot for the students to use the venue by issuing a permission to unlock the door by an e-card system. Then, the students can open the door through the authorized e-card within specific timeslot. When the time is about to end, there will also be a short message for reminding student to leave. Since the electronic lock system keeps a log for the room entry at the same time, the information got from different venues inside the school may give a real time record of the students who are in school. It is particularly useful in after school, weekend and public holiday.

SS10-River Cleaning Boat

Tuen Mun River’s smell and floating garbage have been disturbing the neighborhood around the river for many years. Sometimes there are some fish corpse and mouse. some animals like fish or birds may eat corpses or floating garbage by mistake, which threatens the environment and the eco system. Two special-purpose remote control boats are being constructed. One is designed to collect floating garbage and the other one is designed to filter oil out and remove the smell. The main purpose of this project is to clean and purify Tuen Mun River, which can achieve sustainable development.

SS09-OPERA-Wheelchair

Wheelchairs have evolved enormously since its invention. Nowadays, some wheelchairs can climb stairs or power themselves with photovoltaic panels. However, these amazing functions have not been combined to design a revolutionary wheelchair. Our design is named OPERA-Wheelchair, which refers to Optimus-Class Photovoltaic panels equipped Electric and Revolutionary Automatic Wheelchair. Making it more convenient and comfortable for the disabled to head out is not our only goal. Allowing them to feel empowered by this piece of advanced technology they are using is the other. Details of the wheelchair are presented in several ways. A 3D-model in CoSpaces Edu, an animation and a 1:30 3D-printed model are created to show different functions of the wheelchair which include the hydraulic pillar that allows elevation and demotion of the chair, a conveyor belt for transferring the user onto their bed and the continuous tracks on the wheels for climbing stairs. We are convinced that our design will be able to help the disabled and inspire future innovative designs of wheelchairs.

SS11-Watch Your Back

Due to the pandemic of Covid-19, students in Hong Kong usually spend a lot of time sitting in front of computers to have online lessons or sitting in the classroom for lessons. An improper sitting posture of the student could harm their health and body growth. Therefore, in this project, our group wants to invent a smart device called “Watch Your Back” (保背智多星). Which is a wearable smart device that consists of various flex sensors on it to monitor the bending rate of the user’s back. It also consists of IoT features to work with smart phones that provide health monitoring features to users.

The main feature of “Watch Your Back” is to assist users to keep their sitting posture in a proper angle. When users bend their back too much, the microcontroller will activate the vibration motor on “Watch Your Back” to alert the user to keep a proper sitting posture. “Watch Your Back” also has a statistics app on smart phones to record the data from the sensors. Users can keep tracking their back posture.

The prototype has successfully been invented and simulated different sitting positions by a wooden model. Significant improvements are expected in students’ sitting posture during face-to-face and online lessons and reduce the risk of suffering from back pain and injuries. It is hoped that the invention is able to raise students’ awareness on the significance of maintaining correct sitting position and posture.
